virginiam
Dear fellow members: I have just discpvered my daughter's unfinished doll house from (I kid you not!) from 10 years ago. It is 95% complete and I would like to complete it. The only thing I seem to have misplaced is the warm-up sheet which had the additional instructions on it. I've looked through the site hoping that there were instructions somplace, but haven't stumbled upon them. The home is The Arthur - Can someone tell me how to do the following: 1) I would like to hinge the front door, but don't remember how that was supposed to be done. Any suggestions? 2) I haven't yet glued in the windows. It seems that they would be glued from the inside, but I'm not sure if there are enough pieces to put trim on the inside? I haven't counted the pieces yet, but maybe someone has an idea of this. 3) I still need to shingle and am going for the random look. The pieces are oblong with rounded corners on both sides. Am I supposed to trim the 2nd corner or use the whole piece? Thanking you all in advance, Virginia Murphree
Peggi
Welcome Virginia. I haven't done the Arthur, but to hinge the door on my Coventry I drilled a small hole in the top and bottom of the door and the doorway. I then took a small finishing nail and placed in the top hole and in the top doorway. Then place a nail (or small pin will do) in through the bottom of the doorway into the hole in the door. It worked perfectly. I've also used the small hinges on my Lily, but they must be very carefully opened or the hinges want to work loose. I'm sure Holly will weigh in, she has a good method using chamois as the hinge and placing it between the inner and outer parts of the door and then glueing to the frame. I believe more details are in our Coventry Cottage blogs here on the site. If you don't have enough trim for the windows, you can use the outside trim for a pattern and use scrap pieces from the kit to make interior ones. As far as your shingles, I'm not sure which ones you've got, so I won't venture any advice on it. Have fun with your dollhouse and be sure and share pictures. havanaholly
<heave, ho, thud, thud, thud> I am weighing in with this quote from my Arthur blog: To make the hinges I cut a 1 1/2" X 1/2" strip of chamois into thirds and glued a scant 1/4" of one long edge along the door edge I want to hinge. When dry, I glued the door trim to the door, over the edge of the "hinges", and clamped the bejeeziz all around. I put "doorknobs" (odd earring studs) on the in- & outside of the other side of the door, so now it's ready to hang when I glue on the trim.I dry-fit the iinterior & exterior door trim to make sure the door will move on its hinges within the frame & make any adjustments. If the door is to open OUT, glue the hinges to the edge of the exterior door opening; IN, to the edge of the interior opening. Glue the trim over the hinges & around the door (I preassemble & paint the trim, touching up if needed after the dry-fit adjustments), I weight it down with books, paint cans or wallpaper paste tubs are OK, spackle tubs are too light. There is enough window trim, there are sills for one side & bottom trim for the other. I was missing one acetate window insert, and elsewhere in my blog I described how I dealt with it. I use white Elmer's glue on the inserts, as it dries clear. I do NOT install the windows or doors until the LAST thing, after ALL the decorating is done. You wrote: Am I supposed to trim the 2nd corner or use the whole piece? If you're staggering your rows of shingles you'll have rows that you'll only use a half-shingle, you can cut it or break it. To shingle the angles where the roof changes direction (gables, etc) I fold used printer paper to match the angle and lay it along the shingle to get the angle right. I used to use my utility knife, but the EZ Cutter does it simpler, and after a few cuts I usually remember to check the angle on the base plate of the cutter and it goes LOTS quicker :o ^_^ . I hope this isn't more than you wanted to know, and by golly, Virginia, you are very welcome to the Greenleaf forum!
Peggi
<heave, ho, thud, thud, thud> I am weighing in with this quote from my Arthur blog: See Holly, I knew you "weigh" in, or at least I was hoping. I blew my own description hated to think what I would do with yours ^_^ Tracy, again thank you for being able to insert a link. I have a problem with having to get out of the reply box to find the articles then having to retype everything. Do you have to do that to or do you have a way to just add the link. I also have problems trying to get the links named anything other than what I copy. I swear it use to ask me for a shortcut name but it doesn't now. havanaholly
it use to ask me for a shortcut name but it doesn't now. It has NEVER asked me for a shortcut name, and I've always wanted to post some other clever link that all that loooong url. That has been one of those "how'd they do that?" questions I wanted to post but forgot to while I was here ("sometimers' syndrome").
Minis On The Edge
I have a problem with having to get out of the reply box to find the articles then having to retype everything. I hightlight the address link then copy. You highlight by clicking the "control" key and the "A" key then you copy it by clicking the "Control" key and the "C" button (I think control is spelled CTL I have a mac so my keyboard is different). Before Dean upgraded, it used to automatically ask you to rename your link. Now, you type your sentence then highlight the words you wish to make into the link. you then click the "world button" that has a paperclip to it and you get a pop up window asking you to insert your link there and then it turns your highlighted words into a link. ^_^ Typing it sounds harder than it really is to do, Try it. :o
