Lynette Smith
Sunday I forgot to take my towel and the lanes in the pool were full, so I just stuck to a short stint on the treadmill and the usual regimen on the weights. Monday I did 20 minutes on the treadmill (right in front of the vent for the fan ), 15 minutes on the bike, the usual weights, and a half mile in the pool. Lynette Smith
Except for twin barbells, I took yesterday off. Today I did 15 minutes on the treadmill, 10 on the recumbent bike, weights. and .825 laps (20 laps). The exciting news is I've lost 7 pounds since starting back at the gym on the 11nth. Lynette Smith
I got interested in watching Oprah reviewing her 1995 interview with Michael Jackson while I was on the treadmill and went 32 minutes! Her commentary on some of his answers and why she didn't pursue some answers rigorously (you shut down the subject if you accuse them of being dishonest) was fascinating, especially in light of later developments. Did weights, starting to increase the amounts slightly, then 5/8 mile in the pool again. Thanks for all the encouragement!
Minis On The Edge
Rosalind & Lynette You Gals Rock!! Keep it up! You both are very inspiring to me too
Shy Spirit
Lynette is the one getting it done - I'm a "wannabe" at the moment! Physio is all I can do right now. Lynette, you are absolutely amazing!! You go, girl!
Minis On The Edge
Rosalind, you are too because you are keeping it in front of you and you are doing what you can. Consistency is the key to weight loss success. I don't feel like working out today myself. I have to do my legs and back today. I know, I gotta do what I gotta do, to get what I wanna get
Lynette Smith
Lynette is the one getting it done - I'm a "wannabe" at the moment! Physio is all I can do right now. Lynette, you are absolutely amazing!! You go, girl! I've been through physical therapy 3 or 4 times and my workouts are based on what I did in PT. My pool time starts with about 15 minutes of a water based physical therapy. A trainer I spoke with yesterday said he has his clients do a lot of sitting on the steps of the pool and moving their legs and so forth. The great thing about the pool therapy is that the weight on joints is reduced, because fat is buoyant (no matter how thin we are, we all have some fat). Also, if falling is a hazard, you only lose your balance and have to readjust). I remember when skater Nancy Kerrigan was hit in the knee by her competitor's thug how she did pool therapy, and that at the time there was a story about how race horses are rehabilitated in pools (hopefully not the same ones the people use  . PT is not something to minimize by saying it's "all" you can do, it's a series of specialized exercises to help strengthen and or retrain muscles and the brain. PT can be every bit as intense physically and/or psychologically as a workout by a competitive athlete. Keep at it! Now, since I'm holding myself to reporting my progress to ensure I don't slide back into not exercising, I'm going to sign off and head to the gym! Shy Spirit
Thanks, Tracy and Lynette - a positive validation was just what the doctor ordered! I feel much better.
Lynette Smith
The heater in the pool is on the blink, so after finishing the PT portion of the pooltime I had to get out for a minute. There was no way I was getting back into the that cold pool at that point. If the problem persists I'll switch to the other location, but I've become acquainted with some of the other swimmers at the one location, which makes it more fun. Shy Spirit
I hope they get it fixed up soon - cold water can't be good for exercising!
Lynette Smith
A pool company is going to be coming (sometime) to see to the heating unit for the pool. It dropped another 2 degrees down to 73, which doesn't sound that bad, but it's 10 degrees lower than the Heart Association recommends and 11 cooler than a competition pool. So I'll hit the other location Sunday, which may not be as fun. The gym is having their 27th birthday, and my preferred location had balloons, healthy snacks, powerade, and a then uncut cake. I wasn't going to push to have a piece of cake, because I can't stand frosting. I make cakes with apple sauce in place of oil for a low fat option (you really can't tell the difference), and no frosting. The boot camp class was very much to my liking. I had conversed with this weeks teacher on Thursday while he was stretching and I was working on a machine, then on an exercise ball. Aside from jumping jacks, there was no jumping (I could actually get my feet apart some this week!) The toughest thing was sprinting across the room 3 times in quick succession, but that beat the standing broad jumps all the way across! I also got positioned under one of the two fans, which made it feel very nice. I talked to the teacher after class about the pain in my arch (lay off the treadmill and do more in the pool, bike, and start ellipticals which are better for the knees and ankles). He asked for feedback, because each trainer takes turns at teaching the Saturday class and he knew I've been to the last two. I wasn't sure what to say on feedback, because the first week was murder, because it was only my second time at the gym in a great while. But after thinking about it later throughout the day, I've decided I'm a fan of his style (and will tell him so!).
Lynette Smith
No gym birthday festivities at the other gym location. I tried the elliptical, but it was too much! I only did a minute. 5 minutes on the recumbant bike, but even it was hurting the arch, so I did the weight machines and hit the pool. I spent time "sprinting" in place, using some water barbells - ordinary running in the water doesn't let you get any speed, and I'd like to be working toward land based exercise. After the other exercises I did .75 mile, which is my first time at this distance, so I'll aim for a minimum of .625 and pushing for the .75 for about a week, then maybe bumping up the distance again. I'm feeling more sore muscles this week after the boot camp class, but thats okay. It's not the pain to the point of immobility. I've started looking a little at shoes with more arch support. A clerk showed me some insets at Payless Shoes; while they looked comfortable, I didn't see any real support for the arch, just the heel. Tomorrow maybe I'll check some more stores. Even though my present shoes don't offer support, they are so much better than my last pair which only lasted a month, then the interior of the heel of the left shoes failed. I can just see the trend toward more expensive shoes accelerating...
Minis On The Edge
Lynette, it is so hard to find the right kind of shoes! I had a perfect pair but alas they wore out and now I can't find a good pair of walking/running shoes. Today, after the delivery truck comes and goes, I plan to do my workout. Today, I'll do my core workout exercises to strengthen it and hopefully tighten it
havanaholly
It's too hot & humid to hike! or ride bikes! And yesterday it was almost too hot to enjoy paddling! I'll be glad to see Fall this year.
Lynette Smith
I had a perfect pair but alas they wore out and now I can't find a good pair of walking/running shoes. Have you tried finding the shoes through an online retailer? It seems that if they are available anywhere, it would be online.
madhatter
I've been of my exercise routine for about 2 months now and I need some support to get going again. Some more motivation was a picture of me I just saw. How come you always look slimmer in the mirror???? Jenn
havanaholly
It really is better for your feet (and the rest of your body) to buy shoes in person, expecially from someone who has been taught to fit shoes properly (my stepdad was an orthopedic technician and a student of reflexology, so I got the foot-sermons DAILY!).
Lynette Smith
I agree completely that the shoes need to be tried on. Since Tracy already has a particular shoe in mind, finding it online ought to be fairly simple. I bought a pair at Ross for $30 which has more support and is made by a reputable manufacturer. From my trip to Payless and the Dr. Sholls I currently have from Walmart (you would think Dr. Sholl shoes would have proper support  ), that chain store shoes just don't have any support. I'm pleased by the price and there were dozens of styles to choose from. So now I'm looking forward to taking the new shoes for a walk. Last night I went to the gym, did 10 minutes on the treadmill and bike, the weight machines, and 24 laps in the pool. My goggles kept leaking, so it was a major act of willpower to keep going after the 4th lap.
Minis On The Edge
Lynette & Holly, my favorite shoes are 4 years old. I bought 3 pair 4 years ago and am at the end of these. I have been looking online but I can find these Nike's anywhere I may go "hunting" this weekend though  Lynette, You did Fabulous on your workouts!! I wish I knew how to swim. My husband has been trying to teach me cause it is one of my goals. I have a huge fear of water (Long story about what happened) and I will actually go in the water and play in it now. I have been trying to get over that phobia for years and am proud that I can play in the water with my kids n stuff. Sunday before last though, I did pretty good staying afloat and even went down a huge water slide LOL . I did my workout today (Cardio X) and walked on the treadmill today. It felt good to be on the treadmill and listen to music on my iPod I've been of my exercise routine for about 2 months now and I need some support to get going again. Some more motivation was a picture of me I just saw. How come you always look slimmer in the mirror???? Jenn, it is amazing! I look at pictures of myself before I lost the weight and I must say, I NEVER saw THAT person that was in the picture. When I looked in the mirror, I still saw the old Tracy never the one I had become. It wasn't until I lost about 25 pounds did I realize that those were NOT bad pictures of me, they were just pictures of me over weight That's why I keep on trying to stay focused this. I won't loss weight if I don't work out every day and then some days I have to walk or do something extra for at least 30min because of the Graves disease. I gain or hold on to weight very easily (My mom says I have hit that age were weight loves you more too LOL). Hang in there Jenn! I lost a lot of inches my first 4 months and only had 8 pounds lost at first. Then the next 2 months after that, the weight came off. Now I am stuck at a certain weight but it's because I get lazy and don't want to workout every day so I have a timer that goes off every 30min until I work out. It's to help me remember to actually do it and not let other things get in the way I also have pictures of where I was and also older pictures of where I would love to be again. Coming here under this topic to see people still working out is encouraging to me too. It makes me feel like I am not in this battle alone
Lynette Smith
I didn't learn to put my face in the water without plugging my nose until I was nearly 30. A fellow at the gym the other night was telling me that his mother just learned to swim at age 60 and is a regular fish now! One thing I can't do is open my eyes under water without goggles; the odd sensation of water pressure against my eye freaks me out and my breathing gets messed up and I choke, so I wear goggles. I also have major problems with irritated eyes if I don't wear goggles. The swim teacher said "what if you're on a boat and there's an accident?" Why, keep goggles on my person at all times! Either I'm having seasonal allergies or a summer cold courtesy of my eldest baby-sittee, so I was feeling off today and stuck to a light workout: 6 minutes treadmill, 15 bike, weights. I also want to go back to afternoon workout, so I didn't want two heavier ones close together, which was another reason for a lighter day. The pool should be up to normal temperature tomorrow, so back to the other location.
havanaholly
If there's chlorine in the water I don't open my eyes, and since developing chronic dry eyes it's really uncomfortable to open then underwater now at all. If we didn't play outdoors so hard I'd have to go back to my exercise routine with my floor mat. You really do have to be religious about it, but the results in health benefits are so worth it! Lynette Smith
The gym uses saltwater instead of chlorine, which I understand is better for the skin. Yesterday I did 6 minutes on the treadmill, 15 bike, weight machines, and .75 miles in the pool. Today I did 30 minutes on the treadmill, 15 bike, weight machines, and .75 mile in the pool. The pool temperature is on the way downward again, 76 degrees today - I just told myself I was in Las Vegas and eggs were frying on the sidewalk and that to pool is very refreshing. It might be tougher to sell myself if the pool gets down to 71! Yes, Holly, I'm trying to be obsessive about getting in to the gym. I've fallen into patterns where I skip here and there, and the next thing you know 6 weeks have gone by!
Lynette Smith
I started out for the gym for a short workout, but a couple of errands en route took longer than expected. So, since it was fireworks at my old high school, I skipped it so I could make it in time. I did walk a half a mile (and I wasn't the slowest person in the crowd  which has frequently been the case; I now have a top walking speed of 3.3 miles, which is still slow, but 4 miles is average, so I'm getting closer)
Lynette Smith
Went to the boot camp class at noon. My heart rate got up to 156 and didn't drop below 116, so much better than 3 weeks ago were I was at 166 and 136 for the low - I don't feel like collapsing in a heap so much. The pool is down to 72 degrees now. Back to the other location, I think.
