Roxxie2
lol I had one under my chair in the courtyard last summer. I went out to read and then decided to get up and get something to drink. When I came back out I happened to glance down and under my chair was a 6 ft long snake!!! He must have been there when I was sitting there the first time but I didn't see him! I screamed so loud my neighbor came running because he thought it sounded like a "snake" scream! Our neighbors aren't that close so I must have really let it rip! I have to keep my eyes open around here!
blueirishmoon
Have to be careful around here too. We have a woods right next to our house, with lots of oak trees, and, you guessed it, oak leaves. Well, one day my mom was working out there and had picked some leaves up to put in her wheelbarrow, and when she'd transferred them, she realized she'd handled a snake as well. She's lucky she didn't get bit, as it was a big nasty copperhead. She's seen the babies, too, and they sometimes come up through the back porch floor (it's screened in). jbnmini
Well, it's official....finally got to the doc yesterday and she confirmed the 3-week sinus infection and the new thing: bronchitis. blargh. This is what my bathroom counter kinda looks like this morning! LOL She also encouraged eating yoqurt (the live cultures/probiotics) and using the neti pot 2x a day.... sheesh. Hopefully all of this stuff will blast this thing outta my system quickly!!

havanaholly
Whenever a doctor prescribes n antibiotic to kill an infection, DO remember to buy enough yogurt to eat whilst on the antibiotic regimen; antibiotics kill off those nice intestinal flora that keep things moving along.

jbnmini
Thanks Jodi. BTW, I was reading thru your blog about the egg carton bricks....and then the great egg carton stone debacle and was just laughing - sounded a bit like something I've done! Love your humor! Roxxie2
Cynthia I don't know where you live but I had a lot of copperheads in my woods when I lived in Southwest Virginia. We have rattlers here and I made Ray get a guy here to clear around the house last year. I was scared to death to walk to the water spicket because I couldn't see if there were any snakes! We don't have woods, just sand, rock and sage bushes but there are snakes everywhere. I cut through the sage sometimes to walk to a neighbor's house but now that it has warmed up I will stick to the dirt road where I can see what's there. I have the shivers from that stupid snake in the car yesterday! I read in the paper that a woman woke up to fined a mountain lion sleeping on her front porch! This is certainly wild kingdom out here. Sable
This has been the noisiest 24 hours ever! Yesterday the hedge was trimmed and mulched in one of those mulching machines. Last night from 4 to 5 am a very large police helicopter hovered over our neighborhood. This morning we hired a tree service to trim our large trees to prepare for hurricane season, now they are cutting the coconuts off of my rear neighbor's trees. Chain saws, leaf blowers, mulching machines and huge helicopters! I can't wait for the peace and quiet to return.
havanaholly
You mean the mosquito trucks haven't begun their 24-hour vigils yet?

They stopped the mosquito trucks years ago when they realized kids were chasing them on their bikes. It is done by plane now in the middle of the night. Sometimes we get warning to cover our cars. KathieB
I remember back in the pre-AC days of yore when the trucks came by in the middle of the night and at bedtime you had a choice of suffocating in the heat with the windows closed or risk death by mosquito spray. It has been awfully noisy here, too. Jackhammers and backhoe fixing water leak (down the street from us but well within annoying sound distance), roofers still trying to find an elusive leak, landscaper mowers and leaf blowers roaring beneath our windows, and a neighbor's band practicing with the windows wide open. Once upon a time I worked in a headhunting company sitting near several other agents, all of us on the phone all day long. The manager pushed his "cone of silence" on us --- imagine a large, clear cone lowered over your head that blocks all surrounding sound. He said he came up with it because he got tired of telling his workers to "focus, dammit, focus!" It works surprisingly well, especially when I'm writing. My concentration is so focused that Lloyd sometimes had to call my name twice to get my attention. Still, I do sometimes long for the peace and tranquility of our wooded back yard in Missouri. blueirishmoon
NC, Roxy. Now, I know there were snakes in FL, where I grew up, but I stayed out of the Everglades where most of the dangerous ones were, and I rarely saw them where we lived. Haven't seen them here, but I know they're there!
havanaholly
The really dangerous snakes in the Everglades now are the reticulated pythons that people had for pets until they got too big; in the wild thepythons are taking down 'gators and deer and growing to alarmingly enormous lengths. A lot of them came from the Miami Zoo when Hurricane Andrew destroyed the zoo habitat. There are sections of the Everglades that no longer have any mammals left. There is an annual hunting season to try to limit their numbers. Edited May 27, 2016 by Sable
Roxxie2
:O I am just not a fan of snakes!!! LOL I saw a mother coyote carrying a pup in her mouth this morning! That was such a sweet sight to see as they are pretty illusive and usually only come out at night. I planted my flowers and horse trough gardens two days ago and today we got the hail storm from hell and it trashed my flowers! I am grumped about that! :(
blueirishmoon
Our family didn't evacuate for Andrew. Man, that storm was LOUD. We took shelter in an interior hallway that had an attic access panel, that the wind just kept lifting and slamming down. Needless to say, my mom was stressed out and scared, and didn't sleep all night long (too busy saying her rosary). I managed to sleep at some point, and when I woke up, it was just crazy. A tree fell down on the house, the screens surrounding our pool were in shreds, our house had flooded in parts, and most of the carpet was soaked. Mom tells me she saw some really weird lightning during it. I must have been asleep, because I didn't.
CheckMouse
PICTURE IT (as planned): A work-vacation 4-day weekend at the beach. Comfortable waterfront hotel, workday over at 4:00 pm - the rest of the evening is mine - time to go beachcombing for unique driftwood and tiny, tiny weathered rocks - the stuff miniatures are made of! A new micro-mini house is packed in the Minis-On-The-Go case - glue, tools, wallpaper, instructions. Check! Plenty of time to build the little Victorian Mansion! PICTURE IT (as executed): Tickle in the throat, slight soreness, no big deal. I'll shake this cold in a day or two, then leave for the weekend. No problem! Oops! Guess it's the flu, not a cold! Too late to cancel, no one else is available on the holiday weekend, head for the coast - I'll feel better tomorrow! NOT! Off work at 4:00 - in bed by 6:00! No beach, no driftwood, no mini-mansion. Just a miserable bout of the flu! I was so looking forward to this holiday weekend. The 3-day Home Show is on the Coast, lovely venue, fun event with chainsaw carvings, antique cars, good food. I forced myself to get there on time, meet the public and not breathe on anyone, get through the day, and go back to bed.

jbnmini
Spent Memorial Day getting my annual dose of the movie "Patton", then got some dollhouserie accomplished. Also got a late-evening call from my dad's nursing facility that he was restless and upset and asking for me to come sit with him. *sigh* I sat quietly beside him while he calmed down - - going over happy memories in my mind intertwined with prayers for God to just take him Home. He is so weak, and while he is feeling better because the docs took him off a particular medicine, he is still slowly progressing towards the end of life due to congestive heart failure. He longs to go back home, but knows that is not feasible (unfortunately). It is so hard to see him like this! I'm sure many of you can relate.
