Minis On The Edge
Where Is the World's Largest Scuplture?
havanaholly
There's a Buddha carved into a mountain in Asia that may be larger that the Presidents' faces on Mt Rushmore. There were glorious huge buddhas carved into hillsides in Afghanistan that the Taliban bombed out of existance.
MiniMadWoman
Hmm . . . is anyone familiar with the Vegreville Ukranian Egg? I guess it depends on what type of material in the sculpture you're talking about (i.e. crystal, marble). I'm thinking maybe Mount Rushmore?!! EggFacts · Egg Width: 25.7 feet · Egg Height: 18.3 feet · Total Height: 31.6 feet · Material: Alumuinum skin · Turns like weathervane · Weight: 5,000 pounds · Star Patterns: 524 · Triangular Pieces: 2,206 · Visible Facets: 3,512 · Nuts and Bolts: 6,978 · Internet Struts: 177 · Man Hours: 12,000 The World's Largest Easter Egg Vegreville, Canada is the site of the largest Easter egg in the world. The Easter egg or Ukranian 'Pysanka,' was constructed in 1975 to commemorate early Ukranian settlements in an area east of Edmonton. The unique nature and complicated geometry of the egg shape made the design of the Pysanka a highly complex undertaking. Professor Ronald Resch, a computer scientist at the University of Utah, agreed to take on the design project. Professor Resch was responsible for the entire Pysanka concept which required the development of new computer programs. The Pysanka is really an immense jig-saw puzzle containing 524 star patterns, 2,206 equilateral triangles, 3,512 visible facets, 6,978 nuts and bolts, and 177 internal struts. Missymew
Teresa - I had to laugh when you mentioned the Vegreville egg!! Living in Edmonton, it's only an hour's drive away. I'm sure not many people outside the Province of Alberta would be aware of the egg. Susanne
wenlaine
You're right Susanne, I've lived in Ontario most of my life and have a sister in Calgary but I'm one who has never heard of it. Wendy

I'l really be interested to learn this one. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hi Holly, I'm SO bad a geography but I kept thinking it was on top of a mountain so I did a google search and found this: Christ the Redeemer of the Open Arms, located atop the Corcovado Mountain Rio de Janeiro, Brazil At a height of 710 meters but further on it states the statue itself is 30meters tall- the monument totalling 38m) but I cant seem to find anywhere if it's the largest or not <?> But it sure is High! (hope this image works) -David
havanaholly
The picture I'd seen was from over the statue's shoulder looking where He's looking, so I thought it was on an island. It looks awesome from any angle. I had certainly never seen that huge Ukranian egg, either! WOW. We rode by the Biosphere on Ile St Jacques cycling into Montreal last year, but I don't think that qualifies as a sculpture, does it? Now I'm just curious what the biggest sculpture really is! -David
Minis On The Edge
So far, Mount Rushmore is still considered the worlds Largest Sculpture. The figures of Mount Rushmore can be seen with the naked eye from a distance of 60 miles away! Right now, though, there is a sculpture being made that will dwarf Mount rushmore. It is called Crazy Horse When Crazy horse is finished, he and his horse will stand 563 feet tall and 641 feet wide. It will be so large that 4,000 men would be able to stand on the Indians arm and an entire house could fit into the horse's nostril! More info on Crazy Horse can be found by clicking the links. MiniMadWoman
Hubby mentioned Crazy Horse when I asked him. Too bad my egg and Mount Rushmore vetoed him!! Susanne, I lived in Edmonton all my life (at least until five years ago when we moved down here to Wisconsin). Can you believe, I've never seen the egg either!! Next time I go up to visit family I'm going to make a point of it (or is that a yolk of it!!) <_<
LisaN
Tracey, what a beautiful sculpture, and wonderful tribute to Native Americans. I have heard of the statue, but never seen pictures of it before. It is good to know that someone made such a lasting tribute to the Lakota nation. Here in VA. our nearby reservations have Pow-wows, and are very prominent here in the county--they are the Pumunkey and the Mattaponi tribes. Many people in my family are descended from the Cherokee, I had a great great grandmother who was a full blood. Thank you for posting the links--I saved it so I could go back and look at the pics more, it is simply amazing.
