From the album: First Build - Victoria Cottage aka The Bobbi aka Haunted Hou
This was my first build. It was purchased as a project for my 10 year old daughter and I to do together but stayed in my closet for about 24 years. July 4th weekend, 2014 I decided to open the box and work on it with my 11 year old granddaughter (yep, my daughter's daugher:-)) In hindsight, if I had opened it all those years ago I probably would have reclosed the box in fear LOL. I still knew nothing about building and not too good with my hands but decided to tackle it step by step. -

I was just about finished with the house when one Sunday my family came over for lunch and it so happened that my grandson had on the exact same color outfit as the house. He has loved this little house since he first started seeing it take shape. It must make him feel big:-) He was only 14 months old here; he is 23 months old now, April 2015, and he still adores standing in front of it, pointing and talking in his baby gibberish. This house kit was purchased about 24 years ago for his mother and stayed in storage until now. Oh well, better late than never. -

I realize now, after a few more months into the hobby that I could keep adding more accessories, especially to the walls, but I sort of want this build to represent the first one I did so I can perhaps see my own improvement over time and subsequent builds. -

It makes me frown to see my flaws. My little GS loves to gaze into the kitchen at all the little food items. He likes the broom too. -

As I began to think of furnishing the interior I couldn't envision getting much 1:12 furniture in here, so I decided to use a bit of my grandchildrens' (and mine, I admit it) collection of Calico Critters aka Sylvanian Families pieces. I whitewashed the floors. I found the ribbon technique for hanging doors after failing with those tee-niney hinges. It was about this time that my numerous searching for tutorials, etc. brought me to this GL forum. -

It is interesting that this little house is marketed through Greenleaf (Haunted House), Artply (The Bobbi), and Beachwood Ltd (Victoria Cottage) Mine was the Victoria. The instruction sheet was fairly detailed (whew!) and included adequate pictures. The wood was still in good shape after all those years in storage. The first thing I started researching (thank goodness for the internet) was the kind of glue I would need, and any other essential supplies. We didn't care for the colors of the house on the box, so we took paper and crayons and drew our own house with our exterior color choices to use as a guide. -

I used sandpaper shingles on the front roof by gluing it on a template first. The back side is just sandpaper without the detailed cuts. This little house will always be special to me because I recall buying it for my daughter as a child, and now she is a beautiful mom herself reminding me of how fleeting time is. -

This was a bear of an alcove to finish out. Nope, I didn't know to prepare it before gluing in place. -

Paint and scrapbook paper and scrapbook wall art for the bedroom. Scrap fabric I already had for the bed linens along with an accent of some burlap ribbon I also had. Calico Critter furnishings and rug. I gave up on the railing all the way around the stair opening. I could never figure it out and excused myself by saying it took up too much room anyway;-) -

Pretty embarrassing to post this picture and others that will follow. My goal was to go exactly by the instructions. It was the only way I felt safe LOL. It never occurred to me to use spackling and caulking or alternative finishes. My main concern was to get the glue to hold.
