  1. Hello! I am working on my dollhouse kitchen, and I want to add beams to the ceiling. I heard balsa wood is good for pretty much everything. Would this be a good choice of materials? What is the best place to buy it? The picture shown is something I found online that is something like what I want to do.
  2. I haven't 'been able to work on my dollhouse for the last week or two and getting itchy! But the issue is I've been in an RA flare for the past two weeks and my doc put me on some medication last night in the hopes it will take affect. I was curious to hear how others with RA work with their miniatures. Do you have any tips, advice, or suggestions? Thanks for your time! Carolyn Robinson
  3. Anyone have any tips for photography other than using the macro function? I know lighting is a big factor, and I have a 6' window in my craft room but my photos still seem a little dark at times. Sometimes the flash helps, but mostly it just seems to obscure details. I have a point and shoot digital camera that's probably 6-7 years old, so I could stand an upgrade... but what features should I look for? I don't necessarily want to spring for the expensive Canons with interchangeable lenses (remember, I have a kid in college and a mini addiction that eat up most of my disposable income), but would like to get some decent photos of my minis. I see so many fabulous pictures in the galleries that so often look like the real thing, and I just wondered... what all do y'all do to take such clear, crisp, realistic photos? (I did search to see if this topic has been covered before but wasn't able to find anything. Perhaps I just missed it?)
  4. I'm looking for tips on selling at miniature shows. Gonzo has given me some great ones, but I've only been to a few shows and was so engrossed in looking at the merchandise that I never really paid attention to what goes into selling at one. Details such as how much change to have on hand, what are the best kind of price tags to use, what kind of table covering to use-plastic, paper, fabric? How to display accessories all on a tiny budget. I welcome any ideas anyone may have!
  5. One of the things that I love about this hobby is the way Im always learning new techniques and finding new supplies to improve the quality of the work that I do and become more self sufficient as a collector so Im not purchasing as much, I love learning to make my own items. This past year Ive discovered: ~Punch needle embroidery ~Yes glue ~the charm of Half scale dollhouses ~a clear acrylic quilters ruler makes a great tool for doing a traditional shingle roof ~artist quality paint is better than craft quality paint...its worth the extra few bucks ~how much better my wood floors look after several coats of poly, I wont skip this step now ~E6000 glue, my favorite now for working with glass beads, etc ~Making your own furniture is NOT as hard as it looks, its easy and rewarding Things Ive always wanted to learn how to do, and I finally did: ~Leather books ~Potion bottles ~Trunk ~rugs ~mini silk ribbon roses Its exciting to think of what I might learn next. Is there a new tool or tip youve discovered recently so we can all learn from your experience?
  6. Hi. My name's Amber, and I currently live in Florida. I'm actually only 16, so I'm still in high school, and I've recently become interested in dollhouses and miniatures. I just bought my first kit, the Orchid dollhouse, from Hobby Lobby, but I haven't been able to put it together yet. (Bit of money issue with getting glue and paint ^^; It happens.) I'd very much appreciate it if people, out of the kindness of their hearts, would be willing to help me along if I get stuck with something, or give me tips of what NOT to do so that it isn't a total disaster. I will be using Elmer's wood glue though, and BEHR Ultra paint, in case anybody needs to know that.
