I really wanted rod-iron spindles. I tried tooth picks with beads painted with chalk paint, I cut teeny dowels and glued beads in between the cut dowels. Finally I bought Hobby Lobby spindles and painted them with chalk paint. (My husband uses chalk paint to make metal look like rod-iron in RL.) The spindles from HL looked the best. -
So, I'm happily building along, thinking I've done a great thing by upgrading my plain porch spindles and posts with Houseworks upgrades. THEN I see M & D's FABULOUS Victoria's Farmhouse and how they used 2-3 colors on each of their spindles (instead of just one color), and I'm thinking... dang! I gotta paint all my spindles like that because it looks so awesome! <Cue psychological breakdown here> Am I insane? For one thing, this is my first build and I've started with a doozie of a house as it is. For another, I have something like 70+ spindles to paint, and I've already spent several evenings putting the first coat on and then SANDING EACH ONE BY HAND when the paint caused the grain to rise. But, man, their porches look so cool! And I've never seen anyone do that to a Dura-Craft Victorian Mansion before. What do you guys think? I've attached pictures of several paint options (please ignore the horrible slap-on job I did... just trying to get an idea of what color goes where). I have one of the porch posts in there too... not sure but I'm leaning towards the garnet color on the ball thingees and the lighter grey color (sorta hard to see, maybe I should go darker?) on the flat part in between all three ball sections. Suggestions, comments, advice, tips, etc., etc., all greatly appreciated! FYI, since you can't really tell in the picture, the colors on the spindles are light grey at the bottom of the one closest to the post, light grey on the long flat part with white on the balls on the spindle in the middle, and the last spindle on the right has grey on the top two balls above the two red ones.
