I have the foundation done. I started by writing in pencil, the numbers and names of the pieces, then though when I base paint them I will be painting over the writing. Another suggestion was using masking tape to write on. Now i'm on sheet 15, and realized the tape has to come off also, but I could put the tape next to the piece. But why aren't I painting the whole sheet, if I'm not going to stain it yet. and it would leave .sides with nothing to make gule useless. Other the other thing I read is dipping the part in a mixture of 50%/50% of something to seal the wood. I do have a problem with over thinking and I think I have TMI. Please help me. I am stopping for a few days. Pellets are getting low and I would like to get the parts sealed or at least sanded before I more it all from my studio to the house.

Hi, I am currently working on my first dollhouse. It is an Alison Jr. I am hoping to handpaint and illustrate my own wallpaper and am not sure where to start. What paper is recommended? Also wondering if a seal, specific glue is required. I was hoping to make individual entire wall sized paintings (probably with watercolour paint) that will mount to the walls as wallpaper (and won't fade over time).

Hi, I want to paint my shingles "realistic" on a Victorian dollhouse.My plan was to mix an acrylic wash and apply it in a varying number of layers to get some variation. Don't know if this is a good idea. Here in Sweden we dont have many Victorian houses; is dark brown or black good choices?

Hey all! I know I've been MIA for a very long time, but, well, it's too much to go into. Physically I'm still having problems and not able to do much of anything, least of all my minis, but there's been one thing keeping me sane.....I'm learning how to paint on canvas. <wry grin> All it requires is one hand and that's about all I've got left in the way of working parts, so it's my creative outlet. The artist I follow is Jane Font, who provides free video tutorials on You Tube under the name "Painting With Jane". Jane's a sweetheart and her teaching skills are so excellent that even on a bad brain day, I can easily follow along. She makes it all simple with step by step instructions. The reason I popped in is because this morning Jane released a surprise video............how to paint a micro miniature canvas! Well, technically, it's more like 1:12/1:24/1:48 depending on where you hang it, but at 3/4" x 5/8", it could be a sofa sized painting for a micro mini. I know that one of the biggest complaints we have as miniaturists is finding affordable art work for the walls of our dollhouses so when Jane released this, I begged her for more of this size! Trust me, this is so simple that anyone can do it and you don't need to be able to draw or have the slightest bit of painting ability. Just follow along and it comes out gorgeous! She's using acrylic paints for this one, but you can use craft paints just as easily and we all have tiny brushes right at our fingertips, so give it a try! You can paint it on cardstock, or you can get little 3x3 canvases at walmart and simply cut out the size you want. I can't recommend this too highly because it's simple and easy and you can make gorgeous paintings for your dollhouses without spending a fortune! Hi all, I'm working on the Orchid (TMF) my first house in 31 years. I was thinking about putting the bottom partition in so that the kitchen is on the left. I thought about extending the bay window in for a small table. For those of you who've done this house, would that work?(i.e. proper height) I really don't want to put printed wallpaper on all of the interior walls, and I've heard that you shouldn't paint them, so can I put up solid color cardstock instead? I'd read some posts about scoring the floor and staining to look like floor planks, but my shell is already together. Could I make floor planks with craft (popsicle) sticks? I'm having a hard time sanding the edges of pieces to get them really smooth. They seem to be rough no matter what I do, and on some of the narrow trim pieces, some of the back layer has actually fallen off. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

I'm new to miniatures and I recently bought a small dresser from Hobby Lobby. It's unfinished wood and I've already sanded it so it's smooth, but I'm not sure how I should go about painting it. I have a design in mind, but I haven't seen any tutorials with step-by-step instructions. Should I use primer or sealer before painting? And what kind of paint should I use? If it helps, this is what I got and this is a picture of my dresser after it was sanded. If you could include brands of paints or any sealers I should use as well, that would help a lot. This is my first time painting anything and I want to do it properly. Thank you!

Read this in The Family Handyman the other day and thought it might prove useful in miniature. Dampen your brush with water before you start painting with water base paint---it makes cleaning your brush later a whole lot easier.

I've been planning the colors for the outside of the Beacon Hill recently. But the house is SO BIG that I knew I was going to get confused. I started by printing out this page from the GL store. I used a pencil to mark what color everything should be -- making plenty of mistakes along the way, so I was grateful for the eraser. I also used a couple of our friend's photos of their finished BH houses to figure out how to tri-color the house (There are SO many details!). I now have a little folder of print-outs of the BH where I've planned all of the color stuff. That way I can take it to Hobby Lobby or wherever and not just wander around confused about what colors I need. I wanted to share this tip for anyone who is a.) building a highly-detailed gigantic house like me or b.) brand new to the game and not sure how to plan paint. Anyone else have tips they want to share?

I just started priming my pieces for craft paint, and I still have the other side to do on the boards, but I thought of something that has been confusing me. Is it better to paint the pieces before or after you take them out? Some of the pieces are really close together and I don't want to accidentally paint an item a wrong color.
