  1. From the album: Mini Animals

I'm always enamored by the OOAK sculpted & flocked animals on Ebay, but I can never win an auction and they are quite expensive! So, I decided to buy a Schleich cat at the local toy store for the princely sum of $6 and flock it myself.... How hard could it be right?... Ummm it's hard! lol I have a real problem with overestimating my abilities and underestimating the skill required for a LOT of mini tasks. I'm sure there is a name for this affliction but I don't know what it is. Anyway, here is my first attempt. It took forever and involved quite a lot of attaching removing and reattaching combed wool to this tiny animal. I learnt a lot of things during this process. Mainly things I wouldn't do again... I applied way too much wool, I was going for coverage but it ended up creating the thickest coat ever on a cat (this Cat could live quite comfortably in Antarctica.) which made it incredibly difficult to shape, and ended up in a larger cat than is really true to scale... (I'm just going to call it a Maine Coon ).. Also, I used knitting 8 ply Merino wool which when combed out is quite curly. I did this to keep the budget down, but next time I would use specialty combed straight wool for this process.. It's expensive, but the result is superior and for the amount of hours spent on this project.. I really should have bought it. I also still need to work on the ear hair a bit and use some pastels to colour the nose & lip area. I also need to define the claws a bit more and perhaps some shading inside the ears. I can see another haircut may be in order also. Overall though, pretty happy with the first effort. I see now why people sculpt their own animals.. You can put them into poses that aid furring and give more definition to the legs and feet. I will probably try to do my own soon, but first I have to figure out how to make eyes. Her colouring was chosen to copy my first ever cat, Susie.. she was a fat lovely old soul who never scratched me even when I put her in the toilet and closed the lid....

    Grandma And Fala

From the album: Country House - Renovated

Grandma and Fala enjoy a nice break in the comfort of their home. Holly's cat is in the background. It looks real, but it is only a stuffed animal.

    Meet Fala

From the album: Country House - Renovated

When I was visiting Franklin D. Roosevelt's home in Hyde Park, I bought a resin replica of Fala, the President's famous dog, in the gift shop. Fala is the family pet, although his eating dish (not seen in this picture) says "Missy." Missey was my dog, a beloved toy poodle, and while we spelled her name with an "e," I couldn't help buying the dish when I saw it. Fala's favorite room is the kitchen, and when the dish is filled, he doesn't care whose name is on it. I had the rocking chair since I was a child, and it used to be on a shelf in my room. I have a matching rocker on the porch.
  8. Growing up on a small horse farm we had our share of stray dogs and cats that we made our own. Mom had a kind heart and since dad traveled a lot, she was able to convince him (manipulate??) into letting us keep many of them. I guess I inherited that from her. The last thing we needed was another dog. On my way home from the airport Wednesday while driving the country roads, I saw a dog running down the middle of the road. He almost got hit three times. One idiot didn't even slow down. I stopped in the road and he ran up to the car, but wouldn't let me close. He stepped into the hay field and his legs were shaking. I found a crushed can and grabbed my bottle of water out of the car. I poured -- he drank...and drank...and drank. Don't worry, I know to be careful. I started petting him and eventually got him in the back seat of my car. That was when I realized how dirty and smelly he was. I checked the farms on the road, called the area vets, humane society and shelter -- no luck. I had my daughter meet me in the driveway with dog shampoo and we did a quick clean. We fed him and he ate...and ate...and ate...again in moderation. My daughter works for a vet, so I took him in yesterday. the vet looked at him and said that I definitely have a "fixer upper." He was recovering from dehydration and starvation, was covered in flea dirt (only saw one live flea, but pet owners know that means more), has sores and some hot spots. His ears are chewed up and covered in dirt and sores. His nails were all long and curled. Normally I would have trimmed them, but as bad as they were I waited for the vet. Four shots, three meds, wormer, this new miracle flea/tick pill (kills all in 30 minutes and works for a month), a nail trimming and heartworm check and then back home for another, more detailed bath. He has mostly slept for two days, but is on the road to recovery. he has a bed in the garage so the other animals leave him alone, but I let him in for a bit today while catching up on some reports. After exploring a bit, he crashed at my feet. I think he snores louder than I do. Now, one more bath and then let him heal and find a home for him. He knows how to sit and he asks to go out. His nose is a little deformed, so he has been crated in the past. He is a 4-5 year old beagle mix, possibly a puggle. If you know anyone within 100 miles of Indianapolis looking for a good dog, shoot me a PM. I have made posters and such, but am not hopeful of finding the previous owner.
