  1. FurMama's post here reminded me that I have two Greenleaf kits (somewhere! I haven't seen them in months!) that I had once intended to bash. Yeah, I know, another project I'll probably never get to. I didn't want to hijack her thread with my own project and questions so I'll start anew. The kits are this one: https://shop.greenleafdollhouses.com/laser-cut-chantilly-dollhouse-kit/ That brought up the question of just how hard is it to kit-bash a tab-and-slot house? Can you reverse them by flipping over the pieces? I know it's more involved than that but I think you get what I'm asking. I've never built a tab-and-slot house before. I owned one but I didn't build it. Way back in the day when Michael's stopped carrying Greenleaf products, I got a smokin' deal on their already-built Beacon Hill display model. What a mistake that was! I eventually gave up on that mess and set it out on the curb with a "Free to Good Home" sign. Mind you, that is in NO WAY slamming Greenleaf. Trying to fix up that shoddily constructed hot-glue-gunned-POS was a nightmare I never should have attempted. ANYWHO . . . I finally managed to find my silly mock-up of what I'd intended to do with my two kits. You're all the experts on this, can it be done?

I am pondering if I should modify the second floor to add a small bathroom (I've placed a board on the spot), thoughts? It would be a very tiny room, looking from here I'm afraid it will end up breaking the 'aesthetic' of the house, but on the other hand I'm not sure what to do with such a large room. Or should I simply do a period house with no bathroom? Add a bathing tub to the bedroom perhaps... I'm so used to seeing houses with one, but I can't say it's one of my favorite rooms..
  3. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

I'm not sure what to do with the floor, I've tried printing some victorian tiles I liked, I wanted to cut them in squares to imitate a tiled floor. But I'm not very happy with the look...the papper is very glossy and looks a bit off with the rest of my decor. It's a shame because the pattern is really pretty.
  4. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

Finished the exterior walls and glued the roof. There's still a lot more to do on the porch and bay window, I'll probably use a light stain for the floorboards here. And I need to test stains for the shingles... I'm thinking either grey or black. I'm a bit undecided about the roof decoration... with or without finial, and style of cross bracing. I'm thinking about modifying the original vergeboards... if in the end they look too "heavy" and thick perhaps I'll cut new ones.

I am using Joint Compound (large tub and super cheap) from Lowes as my Stucco. This is my first time working with a plaster/stucco finish on a dollhouse. I like it so far. I am getting the hang of it.
  6. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

It looks a bit wonky at the moment, some key parts haven't been glued yet. I'm having a serious dilema with the wiring strip, where can I hide that black chunk of plastic? The house has no foundation, I thought perhaps I could hide it under the stairs but I tested it now and it won't fit... if I place it in the attic it will be visible, what should I do?
  7. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

Added the stairs and testing the ceiling template. Still needs some work, the light is terrible quality but the center area is embossed with a metalic copper finish imitating a "tin" effect. I thought it would be a nice combo with the walnut stain on the stairs. I'm thinking about doing baseboards in the same stain color as the stairs, would the door and window frames look better in the same color or cream (as in the kitchen)? And I need sugestions for the color of the front door... light or dark wood? Or maybe a color, like blue? I want something that will contrast with both the exterior trims and the interior, it's a paladian style double door.
  8. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

Trying to finish the attic area this weekend, I was thinking about using these foldable stairs by Alessio Miniatures but I think the ceiling height might be too short... they will end up being barely visible when folded (the roof will fit into that gable frame). What do you think?
  9. From the album: ~ Chantilly ~

I've finished the walls and ceiling in one room, I'm calling it 'the kitchen'. This is pretty much the same style I used in my Beacon Hill kitchen, but in reduced size. I've cut the wainscot strips and trims out of basswood, same for the arched doorway frame in the bay window wall (the kit doesn't come with this frame). The ceiling is embossed papper, same style I did for my Fairfield.

Started working on the half scale Chantilly on the weekends. A smaller project like this is perfect for when I don't have a lot of free time, unlike the Beacon Hill I can just work in small bursts here and there. This is the assembly as of right now, I am currently working on the interior walls for the attic so the roof will only be glued when the decor in that room is finished (it's too narrow to work otherwise). For the exterior I'll be doing vertical siding with diamond shaped shingles. I was considering either light yellow or beige for the walls, but it wasn't constrasting enough with the trims so I ended up going with this grey-brownish color instead. Last night while testing the roof fit I had to modify the tip of the front gable to fit my roof modifications. I have 'straightened' the eaves so this house won't have that top roof overhang as in the original kit.
  11. Hi there! I wanted to pick a small dollhouse project to try to finish before the next local dollhouse show this year (around October), not sure I'll find the time but I'm going to try. I've choosen the Chantilly half scale, I've seen some pictures of this house finished in the gallery looks really interesting and not very big or complicated. I was wondering, how long does it take to put this house together on average? I've checked the sticky thread with construction times but this house wasn't listed on it. Also ordered some speed strip shingle packs to go with it, heard good things about those and it seams it's faster than applying individual shingles.

In this first dry fit, I've built the structure in reverse (sometimes called "inside out") and will be closing up the wall on the right for a chimney. I plan to change the main front eave from a hip roof to a regular peak roof, and will extend the right hand side down to give the front an appearance more like the Glencroft. I'm planning a small balcony area above the bay window.

I got a bag full of plastic furniture, very veeeery cheap... sort of half scale furniture. Not fancy but not too bad... I tried them on the Lilac Cottage... not bad.... I'm going to paint the pink ones 'cause I hate pink. As soon I find some paint that works with plastic... argh!
