  1. Back when I started building the Duracraft San Franciscan, the one made of MDF, I decided it needed a basement, so a carpenter friend of mine cut one for me based on my specs. It's got window openings and an opening for stairs. I'm not asking any money for it, just the cost of sending it to where it would need to go. I think I can get packing materials for free. I've posted some pics, although they're not the best, but they'll give you an idea of the piece. It's made from 1/2" thick excellent quality wood. I decided to go in a different direction and didn't build the house, but I hate to just
  2. Howdy everyone, I've been slowly but steadly (and quietly forum-wise, though I've been keeping up with the buzz!) working on my Orchid; I'm at near-completion in terms of the house structure itself! Pictures soon to follow. I was thinking through a way to spruce up the exterior wall of my Orchid (there aren't any windows on the first floor). I'd like to add some interest to that side (so that it isn't overshadowed by my little Greenleaf greenhouse add-on on the opposite end of the house). In short, Has anyone ever built a cellar addition? If so, did you only constru

Today I did a little maths and figured out the size of the cantilever off the porch for the redesigned front stairs. I've glued my three flights of stairs together and mocked them up here. I still have some tweaking to do, but I like how they are turning out. I think I will have the top flight as painted wood with railings to suit the porch railing (which I will be changing). The second and third flight of stairs will either be completely bricked in a brown tone brick or have bricked risers and and "concrete" slab treads. You can't really tell here but there is a decent window well un

Today I did a little maths and figured out the size of the cantilever needed off the porch for the redesigned front stairs. I glued together my three flights of stairs and mocked them up here. I moved the second flight of stairs back in line with the top flight as suggested by @Debsrand56. You may also notice that I've managed to tone down the pink stonework... That is if you aren't distracted by the hellacious bloodbath on my foam! (Well, not really, but as you can see I've also been working on a tree and the colour of my air dry clay is.. erm.. unfortunate... Not to worry crime sce

Took a good stab at laying the stone for the San Franciscan's basement yesterday. I'm using some Andi Mini stone I had in my stash.. do I love it for this project?... mmm.. jury is out.. but the price was right and it saved a lot of time on making egg carton stones.. I'm not in love with the colour of these stones, they are a bit pink for my liking... I'm wondering if I can do a paint wash over them to tone them down? Thoughts? This is the left side or "low" side. That's one big stone wall.

I'm not in love with the colour of these stones, they are a bit pink for my liking... I'm wondering if I can do a paint wash over them to tone them down? Thoughts? This is the right side or "hill" side.. There will be a chimney between the windows hence the cut out in the foam... Obviously I didn't really need to stone th

Working on the Landscaping Board today... I know it seems like a job for the end but I need to at least lay out the plan and mock it up because the hillside will determine where "stone"goes on the outside of the basement. Additionally the new front stairs are an integral part of the landscaped hill and therefore careful height planning is needed to incorporate the stairs later. I've decided on three flights with two turns, thanks to the greenleafers who weighed in last post and suggested three. As you can see it's a fairly rough mock-up but you get the idea. I've built t

Working on the Landscaping Board today... Still very much in mock up mode... As you can see I've just used random pieces of foam to simulate the lower landing. I may even put another set of three stairs on the other side of this landing facing back towards the apartment door. That way the little occupants have a choice of stairs whether going to the garage or the front gate. The foam will all be covered in water putty or some such product (again thanks to the Greenleafers who made suggestions.) to simulate a painted cement retaining wall. It'll probably have some cracks in it

This is the basement apartment main room. Originally I was going to have the kitchenette at the front beside the front door and under the window, but it didn't leave me enough room for a sofa bed or murphy bed up by the bathroom. So I've had to switch it around. The kitchenette will now be a galley style at the rear near the bathroom and the living/sleeping area will be up front. I will most likely build some kind of modular corner sofa bed arrangement as I don't know where exactly to put a murphy bed. In the kitchen area, there will be a small sink, counter top stove a small under co

This is the basement bathroom floor plan. It's a small room so has a pretty basic design There will be walk in shower in the back. Basin with Cabinet mirror & Toilet. I may make a little custom shelf unit for between the basin and the loo. The door will change to a Classics Narrow door (on order) to free up some wall space for accessories such as towel racks etc. Furniture is just place holding, I still need to make some choices for this room.

In the living area there will be a modular corner sofa bed arrangement of some sort (to be built). On the wall between the kitchenette and living area will be a tall thin storage cupboard. A small round coffee table and a storage unit on the diagonal wall for a TV and books, will round out the furniture for this room.

Top view of the entire floor plan for the San Franciscan basement. I finally got all my window and door holes cut. I will need to make some adjustments to the garage door opening as it's a bit large. Once the exterior stone goes on it should solve some of the issues.

I've added basement window to the "room" side of the basement to give a little additional light. The chimney will go between these windows.
