  2. Half Clocked - Creatin' Contest 2018 Updated

Half Clocked is situated in a market village known for its unique shops, mountain scenery and beautiful gardens.  While the shop has timepieces for sale in every price range, the main attraction is the working cuckoo clock on the face of the building.  Every hour and half hour, the cuckoo emerges from his home and bellows the time to the delight of onlookers.  Half Clocked is open daily from 10 to 4, but the cuckoo sounds from sunrise to sunset.

  4. Spring Fling 2010 - Baslow Ranch Updated

The overall feel I went for with this project was that of a late 1880s building that had been updated over time with electricity and other "modern" features of the passing times. It now sits as an open air, living museum to remind us how people lived and worked. I relied heavily on my trip to Bodie, CA - an open ghost town where you can walk around and explore - as well as other living museums I have visited. The backdrop I used in some of the shots is a photograph I took in Bodie, CA.

I've named the Spring Fling structure Baslow Ranch, established in 1888. "Baslow" is a melding of the names of several recently departed pets, and I am dedicating this build to all my animal companions, both past and present.

I tried to make as much as possible for this project, not only to stay on budget but to see what I could accomplish on my own. The things I didn't make include: lights, buckets, barrels, as well as the glass, ceramic and metal minis. Of the minis I bought, however, I still changed most in some way by either painting or weathering or both.

  5. Watson Mill Updated

Built from the 2009 Spring Fling kit and inspired by Jen's (Intrinsicat) Loganberry Mill.
I will keep the full scale aspect and make this more of a fantasy build in the vein of Roland's Retreat.  This will also be a mill rehab with most of the inner workings of a proper mill long gone and replaced with the cozy decor of its current resident, Gustav, who is an otter with a thirst for knowledge and culture.

  8. The Brownstone Updated

A Tudor inspired row house made from the Golden Gate View kit by American Craft Products.

The back story for The Brownstone is that it is the home of a world traveler. I toyed with the idea that this occupant is the grandson of The Haunted Heritage's grandma, and it stuck. :D Our world traveler likely won't have a name, but I'll have to figure out something to call him. He is a collector of interesting items and lives in an upscale neighborhood.

  10. Ye Olde Taxidermist - Creatin' Contest 2016 Updated

Built from the Backyard Bungalow kit from HBS, and now revealed to be Ye Olde Taxidermist.
Keep your dearly departed in your life during their afterlife.  That is the heartfelt mission of Ye Olde Taxidermist, though the shop also caters to naturalists by preserving fine animal and bird specimens for posterity.  Ye Olde Taxidermist makes house, or farm, calls in a stylish Model T Van.  The shop even has a telephone, if you are so inclined.

  11. Walnut Bay Light - Creatin' Contest 2013 Updated

Walnut Bay Light was inspired by Chicago Harbor Light and constructed from the Charming Cottage and Greenleaf Lighthouse kits. I sawed the cottage in half to make room for the lighthouse tower. I cut down the roof on the cottage and lowered the tower as well.

I made most of the furnishings from vintage and contemporary kits. The 16.25" tall spiral staircase is scratch built from textured and smooth plastic sheet, wood beads and spindles, jewelry findings and brass wire. The lantern room contains a Cir-Kit beacon light that illuminates a Harbour Lights Fresnel lens ornament. The tower lights are made from doll hair rollers and LEDs. The wood base is textured and painted to look like concrete, aged from water exposure and sea life.

  12. The Haunted Heritage Updated

I grew up in an old white farmhouse that probably looked pretty creepy to others, but I loved it. It was way too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer and had generally outdated decor and musty upstairs rooms. But, it was my first home and even though it no longer stands, I love it still.

I bought a Dura-Craft Heritage kit sometime ago when I found a good deal on a kit in near perfect condition. I find it interesting that the few pieces broken in the Heritage kit I can replace with pieces I already have from the lost Dura-Craft kit I had a long time ago. Perhaps meant to be...

I have no idea where this project will end up, and I rather like that open energy. I see in my head an old white farmhouse...not completely dilapidated but in a state that might make you pause to enter...but with a warm albeit old and perhaps historically creepy interior.

  18. Otter Cove - Creatin' Contest 2015 Updated

Restful waterfront living is yours to be had at Otter Cove.  The luxury of an off-the-beaten-path getaway awaits with its picturesque views and creature comforts.  Enjoy a walk along the extensive beaches or through the guided trails along the coast.  If the weather is warm, take a nap or read a book on the patio.  If the weather is cool, warm up inside by the fire as you listen to music and let your cares fall away.  Make your reservations soon!  We'll leave the lava lamp on for you.
    --------
I mentioned previously that I had two ideas when I first bought the HBS kit Denise's City Cottage, one of which was a barn find that turned into Milo Valley Farm.  I had nixed that idea for the contest since I needed to change the kit so much it seemed it might be better suited to a different kit.  I tried a few layouts for furnishings and even contemplated adding a lower floor, but nothing worked for me until I tipped it over.
The rafters reminded me of a wall of windows, so I ran with that idea.

  19. Roland's Retreat Updated

Inside the local Clock Tower, there's a secret room where best-sellers are written by the masterfully creative mind of Roland Sneakypants. Here he has everything he could need from a comfy bed to a modest kitchen area with snacks to a workspace.

This build was completed for a recently held mini contest by Real Good Toys called What's in Your Attic? Each participant was to purchase their ready-made attic tower top. The rules were simple -- buy at least one Attic Tower Top and furnish it with what you may find in your attic. Then there was the dangerous statement, "Use your imagination because there is no right or wrong."

  20. Ivy Hollow - Rural Free Delivery Post Office Updated

    HBS Creatin' Contest 2019
Rural Free Delivery has come to the village of Ivy Hollow! Mr. McCants and his trusty equine companion Jebediah will make sure your mail arrives at your home safely and in a timely manner. Register your address at the local post office today!
    ------
RFD - Rural Free Delivery - transformed the landscape of rural towns by removing the arduous chore of traveling long miles to the post office as well as providing greater access to goods and services. Mail order increased purchasing options for individuals and fueled business. Mail carriers were responsible for providing their own wagons and horses, having to traverse poor roads in all types of weather. RFD eventually led to the Rural Post Roads Act, which further developed rural communities by improving roads.
I set my post office in 1917, a number of years after the advent of RFD. The mail wagon passenger cabin was scratch built and fitted over a doctor's buggy kit chassis. Jebediah the horse started as a plastic Breyer model.

  25. Spring Fling 2011 - Baxter Pointe Villa Updated

Presenting Baxter Pointe Villa! The cottage is named after my current dwarf hamster companion, Baxter, who is now an old timer (nearly three years old) and has retired to a luxury beach cottage right on the water.

I tried to make as much as possible and used some tried and true techniques as well as diving into some new territory for me. I'm very pleased with how the build turned out overall, but I must say the aquarium is my favorite! I used the Greenleaf tutorial for it, adding my own sculpted polymer clay fish and LED lighting.

The villa is meant to be a serene place where the cares of day-to-day life just melt away. Enjoy a good book in the living room after having a good breakfast in front of the aquarium at the breakfast counter. Spend some time on the upstairs deck overlooking the ocean. After an active day bike riding on the beach, soak in the vintage tub and rest in the luxurious bedroom.

My theme is luxury beach living, and I invite you to join me for a walk on the beach at Baxter Pointe Villa!
