kellee Posted April 21, 2009 Share Posted April 21, 2009 I finally finished the Shenandoah log cabin... I am not thrilled with it, only becuase it is MDF but It did turn out nice.. I have not started adding furniture yet and I still need to charge the batteries for my camera.... so no pictures yet.. I do love the floors I did with popsicle sticks.... !!! I still did not get the effect I wanted but if you look at a cabin from a distance you cant see the wood grain anyway.. but I really wanted it to look like wood grain.! Jokelly Posted May 16, 2009 Share Posted May 16, 2009 It's beautiful. I was inspired to pull my pine version Shenandoah out today when I was in the basement. It needs some finishing and repair. I have a bunch of other projects to finish, but it will go on the list. I forgot how large it is inside. I bashed mine to have a center staircase and it's big enough for three distinct spaces. I think the MDF was the downfall of Dura-craft. I loved this company. They had great customer service, but when they went to MDF they went out of business. Sherry Posted May 16, 2009 Share Posted May 16, 2009 MDF is really not all bad. I loved making my farmhouse because everything fit together so beautifully. No gaps, sanding, etc, and it makes a house sturdy enough for a child. Mine has gone through a move, been shuffled around the house, and still together. I realize they are heavy, and you have to wear protection when cutting MDF. But you need to when sanding plywood, also! Greenleaf houses are more detailed, and they can do work delicate work with wood than with MDF. I think each type of building material has it's own use, and each brand of house has it's own advantages and problems, but there is room in the world for both-and I like both! havanaholly Posted May 16, 2009 Share Posted May 16, 2009 I thought what Kelly was able to do with the the MDF to make it look like logs was nothing short of amazing, and while I suppose MDF has its place, I've also helped DH make a scratch-build dh for DGD#1 out of 1/2" plywood, and I'll take plywood over MDF any day! MDF is a cheaper material and Dura-Craft went with it to save manufacturing costs and get out of the red ink, and it just didn't work that way for them. IMO if you're going to reduce costs by using a cheap material like MDF, you ought to pass some of the savings along to the consumer and use that fact as a promotional feature, instead of keeping the prices the same or raising them (like with the SF557). I must say I am working on a Victorias Farmhouse that is made of MDF, and I like it !!!! but it is being painted.!!! On the Cabin I wanted it to LOOK like wood with the grain and all... but I just could not figure it out.!! I did the best I could but I dont like how it does not look real.
