M and D's Victoria's Farmhouse

M and D

My homemade jig for building stair railings. This lets me keep the pickets plumb and helps get all the angles correct. I can check and adjust my work as I progress before the glue is totally dry.

Anyone can make this. Cut some scrap plywood at the correct angle of the stair rise and run, then fasten it to another scrap that will lay flat on your work table. You can even clamp it down if necessary. I use a heavy elastic band to hold the treads and then start the pickets. One you have a top and bottom post or picket installed correctly the rest go fairly easy. I use a clear plastic drafting square to check that every picket is vertical.
