Here's the height difference between the original floor, and where I thought I wanted the other floor to be (I've since decided on a bit higher). It makes the bottom floor better scaled, and the top floor usable.

I did this with my Canterbury too, I lowered the floor to just over the windows. It makes a world of difference. You are making me want to work on my Canterbury!
