An easy way to simulate the tiles and have them come out perfectly straight; I use wood pre-cut rectangles. They are sold in the US in crafts stores and are very reasonable. A bag of 130 pieces cost less than $2.00 (with a coupon). Broken jewelry for the trim is a great idea. I also use the craft scrap book 3D embelishments as trim or venice embroidery which I paint over.
