Stonework

Jo Med

Started to stone the outside, its a tedious job but thankfully because its a room box and most of it will not be seen, I only have 4 panels to do. Couple more tomorrow given a fair wind and its back is broken.

Not at all Kim. Its Art Maché which is a sort of papier maché in powder form. You mix it with water to a pulpy consistency, glue your walls and spread it on. It goes on a bit lumpy so you have to spread it out flat with your fingers or a palette knife. I wet my fingers and smooth the surface and then inscribe the mortar lines with a candle carving tool - a cheap steel one I bought on Ebay.. It takes a couple of days to dry thoroughly before you can paint it but it dries rock hard and isn't too heavy. I made a hole for a porch light and stuck a piece of wire through it until I'd finished the stonework. You could always drill it afterwards though. You can paint and seal it all afterwards as you choose.

From what I have read and what Rik Pierce told me, making brick exteriors this way is far more difficult than just laying mini bricks. I doubt I could have kept the pattern as consistent as you have. The finished exterior is perfect.
