Garderobe

Jo Med

They ahd a couple of these - quite something at that time in our history. The toilets are a bit scarey now and very windy - no glass in the windows. Apparently they would have used soft wool as toilet paper and put herbs etc down to combat whiffs - but surprisingly enough the smell of amonia from urine deterred moths so they used to hang their clothes in here - hmmm, think I'd prefer holes in my clothes than stinking of wee personally.

I remember seeing this type of toilet when I was a child in the 50s - usually at the bottom of a garden so for the 1400s this was pretty amazing.

I'm sure we would be shocked by all the aromas of the day if we were to go back in time, but they were probably thankful to have the conveniences.
