Little Moreton Hall

Jo Med

This is the approach to the hall. The drive leads to a bridge over the moat as this is a completely moated building. Although its not so obvious from pictures this house leans every which way. Inside its like going into a fun house at a fairground, the floors and walls slope and lean all over the place. It was built between 1450 and 1580 with various additions being tagged on during that period. The upper floor was a later addition, probably 1600 and the weight of it and the roof has since caused problems with part of the building slip sliding away almost into the moat. However it remained standing unbelieveably, although in a poor state until the 1930s when it was taken over by the National Trust and engineers inserted steel reinforcements to make it safe. I must say it didn't feel very safe when I walked round it today - I was getting pretty dizzy.

Very scary especially on the staircases - all spiral ones - where you could see daylight through the floorboards. Really had to watch your step in this house.

Wow thanks for posting, its surprising people are still allowed to tour the place, but maybe it actually is safer than it sounds like

I just re-visited this album.... this house has been added to our must see list for our trip to the UK in May... I remembered you had posted pictures of it Jo... I am very excited to see it in person :)

Oooh, don't forget Hardwick Hall, Haddon Hall, Bolsover Castle and Chatsworth House - all within a few miles of one another.
