Exterior started... some help please...

kellyannmo

I am going to post this in the general mini forum too... this is my first attempt at siding. The intructions say to do the siding AFTER the window trim was installed. Now I do have shutters to install, so it will hide some of the spaces between the siding and the window trim... but is there a way to close those gaps? I did use a bit of spackle around the curved window... but this seems like a pain... although I couldn't think of another way. The egg carton brick will be mortared of course after I paint it... but the siding.... sigh.... I am not sure I will do siding again... and this is all I have done.

When I did mine (granted I didn't use wood, I used posterboard), I put the windows in place with poster putty. I traced them, then removed them before I installed the siding to the lines. I did have to trim here and there with the exacto knife to get a nice fit and I do have a few gaps, but nothing major!

I wish I had thought ahead... my window trim is all glued in now :( .... sometimes I guess it doesn't pay to follow the instructions... ha ha ha

Ha, can i related to that one! Following the directions i used shallac for my entire house before i found out no one does that. I actually put my siding on first too but while the edges look clean, i had a heck of a time getting the trim on flat so to me is is six of one..... I (again) will share i used the lightweight spackle at the corners where my siding butted against each other. I rubbed it in with my finger then used a spackle knife, scraping it evenly.

With the amount i mention the light weight spackle, i expect many of you think my entire house is made of it!

I am pretty unhappy with it at the moment.... so much so that I walked away from it today... sigh... the spackle idea is the cheapest... since I have it.... but another layer of trim was suggested too.. which appeals to me the most (however this is another house I plan to sell and keeping cost down is pretty important to me).... so I think I am just going to take the day to stew on it.... sigh

it's okay...is there anyway you could get those windows out? It would look better if you cut to the opening of the window and then put the trim over the top of the siding. But it all depends on how you glued them in, I suppose. I wish you great luck! You can do it!

thank you Jen..... I added the shutters and the "fancy" window trim that goes on top and bottom of the windows and it hides the gaps nicely... my only problem now is the curved upper windows. I am going to try to pop them off today... but I did use wood glue... so it could be a disaster... keep your fingers crossed. :)
