Nothing broken, so I went ahead and cut out the ceiling. Because there is plenty of drama in a domed, painted, and eventually lit ceiling, I didn't want the "frame" that was left to compete for attention, so I sanded it smooth as couturier's silk, polyurethaned it naturally, then gave it a wax finish. Here is the finished ceiling before it's installed.
