This is an experiment for me- I would like to try to sell a few mini rug kits- the only ones that seem to be any good are the old HOM which go for big $$. Other than those there are none available that are PRINTED canvas. (easy to find charts- but those are tough for people to follow)

These designs are adapted by me from William Morris designs. I have spent hours on the computer! The process of getting the design onto the canvas is by heat transfer and I need some advice:

1. Should I go ahead and offer on EBay and hope the canvases stand up?

2. Find another mini lover (here!) that might want to try and work the canvas to see how it holds up while working it? (Along with me?)

This is an 18 ct canvas so it is the same count as the HOM kits. Does anyone know if it is wool or cotton that is on the HOM kits? I have never been able to win one to find out.

I'd say at least work half of one yourself (and with someone if you find a taker) just to make sure it does what you say it will. It's a beautiful design! Best of luck!

Thank you! I do like it better than anything else I can find out there. I am going to start one today and see how it goes.

I might offer as a kit with silk or wool yarn but the silk will drive the price up dramatically.

Just a suggestion, you could also offer the canvas with a list of recommended colors and no yarn. I like to change my colorations when I do needlework, so it would be nice to have that option.

What kind of canvas is that? It looks shiny... Besides ebay I would try Etsy. You might have a better chance there and their fees are much cheaper. I hope it works out for you, I'd love to try one of these rugs it looks like it would be much easier then counting stitches.

The canvas is cotton interlock by Zweigart. It is not mono canvas (much more expensive). It looks shiny because I used a heat transfer to put the design on- not painted (can you imagine trying to paint all those tiny flowers?

I just finished a couple more and they are much less shiny- I heated them far longer than this first one. Will try to add more to the album this afternoon.

Yes- I would def offer without yarn too with a suggested list of colors.

I am trying to see how I can photoshop this with different colors- don't think it's going to work- but it might be worth a try. I spent 5 hours on the computer doing this first one. Lots of trial and error.

With heat transfer will the colors bleed if you wash it?Or is it like those transfer pencils that dissappear without marking the floss? This is really interesting. I hope it all works out.

Not at all- it is the same thing you use in T-shirts and bags and quilts and such. Iron on stuff. I did a little bit of stitching on the canvas and all seems ok so far. I think the only thing will be that the canvas stays just a little stiffer than a painted canvas does when you work it- but for a rug that is probably ok.

I am looking at smaller gauge canvas right now- I am thinking 24 ct congress cloth would be even better as the designs are transferring with a ton of detail and 18 ct canvas just isn't doing it justice. But of course it will take MUCH longer! maybe I will do some really small canvases in the 24 ct or even silk gauze- can make great chair cushions with that.

I think being stiff is a great thing for a rug, it'll probably help it lay better. 24 might take longer but it's very rewarding. As you said, you can get a lot more detail. I hope you'll keep us all updated if you decide to sell them. I'm currently doing counted petit-point rug on 28ct canvas and it is taking FOREVER but it's really nice looking with all the tiny details.

Ooh- counted! I admire you. I did one counted rug and decided I was going to find a better way! LOL.

I will let you know how it goes- I don't want to mess with something that will not go well- especially on EBay - the way they work these days is NOT seller friendly. And the fees are outrageous. Etsy will be better.

Hee, I'm doing a counted cross stitch rug over one on 36-count right now. How high can we go?!

For mini rugs I have stitched with wool on canvas and with DMC on evenweave/linen and I prefer the latter, but that's true for larger pieces too. I think I'm just a cross stitch type of gal. If you do use wool and especially if you don't include the materials and only do color suggestions, you might want to do some research into what's easily available. I have a book of mini rugs that are meant to be stitched in Paternayan, which I've had a hard time finding locally. Wool can also get bulky as you get into smaller counts.

I have a HOM kit that I started years ago and didn't get too far with. I'm pretty sure it's wool. If I can find it, I'll check for you... I'm not sure if it's stashed with my mini stuff or my cross stitch stuff.

Thank you! I did find out that the HOM kits are wool- and I am stitiching this first one with wool as well, just to see how it goes. I have DMC wool and using 2 plies- seems to be going well so far.

Looking for the smaller counts now on EBay and such. I think these designs are going to be much better on a smaller count- there is a ton of detail lost on the 18 ct.

If you would like to find a home for your unfinished HOM kit.......maybe we could trade? These could go cross stitch just as easily as needlepoint- just depends on what the material is you want it on.
