I built a surround for the staircase in the bedroom to give a sense of privacy and to make the staircase a major architectural feature. This is the view from the bedroom, looking down into the living room. I used a bit of an optical illusion with the stair runner. The bottom half is blue and matches the living room wallpaper. At the point where the stairs can no longer be seen from the living room, the stair runner changes to one that matches the bedroom drapes and furniture upholstery. This is the only angle where you can see both but you have to stick your head into the house to see it. LOL! However if you're looking at the house normally all you'll see is the illusion that the staircase runner coordinated with each room where its seen.
