Dormer

heartnsoule

Okay, the upstairs room was so lame, I had to cut a hole in the roof and add a dormer. I mean, no window and soooo cramped. I had to open it up. This will be the bathroom.

My husband's co-worker gave us a bin filled with new (unopened but about 20 or 30 years old!) dollhouse components  ...Houseworks windows, doors, siding, everything you could imagine to build a house of some kind, and there were two nice dormer kits in there. I had to modify the angle of the roof because the SF's roof is not at a 45 degree angle, but a razor blade and a Dremel rotary tool come in very handy for that kind of thing!

I had to do it! Very happy!

Wow! The house looks great - very detailed! I had a dream once that I found a bunch of dollhouse components - you're so lucky! Great job on the dormer - it's always scary to cut holes in a house.

This is so cool!! I too decided to "improve" on my Laurel "Harry Potter"project by

adding two dormer windows. So far they are just taped to the roof...no holes yet.I'm

nervous to do that.I do have a dremel tool set, though. Can you explain just how you cut the hole??Thanks...from a" nervous nellie" :(

First of all thanks for all your kind words. I'm also going to add a small stained glass window on the side of the house in the kitchen and two on either side of the fireplace in the second-floor sitting room. Seriously, the rooms are so long and narrow and no windows on the sides. :glare:

Hey Llyn, I know how daunting it can be. Here's what lessened my stress. If you make a mistake, you can always cover it up! Say your hole is too big...you can make wood pieces to fill it in, glue it to your roof and cover with shingles. And on the inside you can make fillers of foam board and cover it up with wallpaper. You probably won't have a problem. But if you do, it's so easy to cover up.

The hole I cut was done with the Dremel rotary tool. I'm sure this is the unorthodox way...First I set the dormer on the roof and drew a rough outline with a sharpie. Then I pulled off the shingles. Ugh! Wasted! Oh, well. Then I re-drew the outline and used the rotary tool to "drill" a hole in the roof. I then used a small hand saw, like an x-acto tool, to hack away at it. When I had it roughly cut, I put on a rotary sanding bit and sanded the edges smoother. All the while I kept fitting the dormer to see if it was right. when it came time to glue the dormer I used 5-minute two-part epoxy. Then I fit in new shingle pieces on the outside. I will cover any messiness inside with wallpaper.

Don't stress yourself too much over it. Good luck with your dormer. Perhaps someone else has an easier way to cut it out!

Where did you get the stained glass for your windows? Was it part of the kit?

Did you make them using plastic? I'd love to know.

And, I love your colors!

Well, the stained glass panels I'm going to use for this room were given to me by my friend Audra. But here's an idea for you...you can buy transparency film at an office supply store. Just find a nice stained glass window you like, and print it out on your computer onto the transparency. You must be sure to get the one with a coated surface for printing. It makes nice windows and you can have any design you want! You could probably embellish with something like Gallery Glass paints to make them textured like Tiffany. I haven't tried that but I want to!

The dormer makes a big difference in that room. It makes it less cramped.

So, I was checking out your beautiful San Fran to see what ideas I could steal from you. Now I am going to add a dormer to the same room. Look what you started! :p That room of mine is a little larger, as I have the wall on the other side of the stair opening. This will be an office...I think. We shall see after I start cutting!

Awesome Audra!! Haahahhaaa!

That is the lamest space ever!! You will be so happy if you add a dormer. It didnt' really add much space to my bathroom but it "opens it up" a lot and the light comes in. I love it.

Good luck to you! You will be so glad you did it!

Now that I've finished my San Fran interior, only 2 months.... I've got to do windows and exterior trim. The xerox of your beautiful exterior is sitting on my work table for me to use as inspiration in trying to trim in window I've purchased.

Your exterior is just stunning!
