Dad's Box: The Cake
The entire project started with this cake, which is a shameless knockoff of something I saw on eBay. I thought my Dad would love it, and the price was way out of my range, so I decided to see if I could recreate it. Then it looked lonely and wanted a room to go with it, then I couldn't give Dad a room without giving Mom one... a month and some later, whew!
The cake is made of Sculpey, with some glow-in-the-dark dimensional paint accents. The spiderweb "platter" is watercolor paper with dimensional paint for the black slip, and dozens of coats of nail polish for the glaze. That simple piece took way longer than I expected because the watercolor paper continued to soak up the nail polish even after many coats. Very odd, but for this purpose, we got a nice look.
The cake ended up so enormous that the rest of Dad's birthday celebration had to rest on the side table...
