I decided to go with a stucco finish on the exterior (even though I have bought the siding). I know it's not as accurate to the Victorian period, but I was worried about messing up the siding. I really didn't want to ruin the whole house! So I've kept the siding and when I'm more experienced I'll go back and apply it then. In the mean time I quite like the look of the stucco.

(It doesn't show up too well in the photos, but it's come out well. I used baby powder mixed with the paint.)
