down pipe issues

Shareb

I've used large straws for the downpipes and sprayed them with a matt black paint.  HOWEVER....now the paint seems to be flaking off easily.  They're attached to the walls and one side has wiring down inside.  What could I use to touch up and keep from any more flaking?   Would art Fixative do it??

Nice work Rebecca! Fixative or varnish may work, or even just Mod Podge. Are you going for a clean/new look or will you be aging them a bit? If so, some "rust" can camouflage the problem areas, as well, followed by the Mod Podge.

I kind of thought this would be lead which wouldn't rust would it??  Certainly i could age it which would definitely hide the problem!  Perfect thank you!  My daughter suggested Mod Podge too so I'll spread a layer of that over the pipes once I've repaired the damage.

Lead would be wonderful! In that case, you could get a realistic lead finish by either a graphite stick or a pencil. Just rub on and buff! Here's a neat sample of what an aged one might look like. A little rust seems appropriate, too:

Can't wait to see what you do!

Ahhhh.....so I went over it with plain black acrylic paint, then covered it all with matt Mod Podge which has stopped the flaking.  I may go back after looking at this and add a little more colour to make it more 'lead' like!!
