That's a mess! So, behind the chimney breast is a sheet of faux brick, to check the scale with the fireplace. Behind that is the old, ugly wallpaper that is securely attached to the wall. Underneath the fireplace is a scrap of flooring, used to check the height of the added false wall, and under the corner is another scrap of wood to keep the crooked fireplace from falling over! I have a lot of work to do!
