2017 Christmas Tree

KathieB

It has been years since I've had a live tree, but this one followed me home from Lowe's the other day, with a little urging from my sister. The stockings are vintage. The one of the left was knitted by an aunt 60+ years ago, the one on the right  quilted by me sister in 2002. The angel on the tree bears my initials and the year 1941, embroidered on her skirt by my mother in honor of her first-born child's first Christmas. :)

The tree, by the way, is on a stand comprising three plastic milk cartons For those of you who know me, this smoke-and-mirrors touch will not be a surprise. :D

Its beautiful.  I love old decorations, with meanings.  Every year I put 2 rather ugly Santas out, but to me they are priceless, because, I don't ever remember them not being out.

Your new house already has the homey ambiance and it is so great to see Lloyd's art on the wall!

The ceramic mask above the bookcase and sculpture on the bookcase are Lloyd. The picture over the fireplace is Richard Thomas, one of L's former students and now a well-known New Orleans artist. The quilted piece behind the angel is by a Gee's Bend quilter whom I had the honor of meeting and, with three other Gee's Bend ladies, had the pleasure of hosting for dinner when we lived in Missouri. The fabric art to the right of it is by a friend who teaches at UNO. The piece below it is a construction I made out of the punched out wood sheets from a Michael's animal puzzle. The sculpture on the floor beneath it is Lloyd's. The 2 vases on the mantel are by Charlie Bohn, another former student and dear friend, as is the vase on the floor by the bookcase. The pitcher on the hearth is Lloyd's. The nativity figures on the mantel are Goebel in Southwestern style, which I collected years ago, There is other artwork in the bookcase but hard to see in this picture.

The sculpture on the left side of the fireplace is the only commercially purchased item but it, too, has a personal link, as it was purchased at a garden shop in New Orleans that has lovely memories of visiting with dear friends. The bit of greenery over the firebox is from Michael's.

It is wonderful to live with these items and many more displayed throughout the house. The vibe of their creators keeps me company every day. :)
