HI....now you CAN to this in 1:12 so keep that in mind.   I took a round wooden craft box with lid, Michaels.  I took what lowes calls premium pine.  I got a inch high photo frame I was keeping and took out the 2 panes of glass.  Too 1 1/4" ish 1/4 channel mini piece.  Oh yes, and wanted the fire on with out batteries or having to turn it on so it was suggested I take a photo.  I glued each pane of glass to each INSIDE channel wall.  The photo I used clear mailing tape.  I used black onyx stain first on the round box, and sanded it.  Then I put black paint on after.  The stain soaks in as I have used this stain (ACE Hardware) on the outside of the condo walls.  The box is 4" but because it is a modern fireplace it can be any size.  You can google them and see for yourself.  If I was doing it 1:12, I would use the drill that cuts a hole in a door, which I happen to have outside.  I wanted it bigger though because this is 1:6 scale.  The wall I distressed but you could do it white, grey or whatever suits you.  You will will many ideas when you pull up "modern contemporary fireplaces."  So jbnmini...go for it!!!

 

So glad you all like it...not done yet.  Want to try some more.  This one was a bit dark for the condo, but made it 15" high so I can put it in one of my self dioramas.
