I had read somewhere on one of the forums that it was wise to make roof patterns out of brown craft paper.  Before I glued the dollhouse together I made my roof patterns and had stashed them away.   Luckily I remembered I had them because it was so helpful when I began glueing on the individual roof shingles; especially on the gables which were difficult to get at.   This first photo shows one of the gable roof patterns I used.   It was so much easier to draw my lines and then glue on the shingles when the pattern was flat on my countertop.   Once completed then the entire pattern piece was then glued onto the actual roof gable.   This being my first dollhouse endeavor it sure made this process a bit easier!  I used my patterns wherever I could but it especially was helpful on the many gables on the Garfield!

I also made templates for some of the floor and ceilings but especially when I did the attic area as I designed and made the parquet flooring there.   The ceilings were all painted and decorated before I glued them in; otherwise I never would have been able to do the detailed decorating had they already been in place.   It took a lot of planning and thought but was worth it in the end.   The roof templates were really so helpful!
