I found some woven bamboo placemats at Big Lots for $1.50 each so I scooped them up.

 

I kinda wish I hadn't left the thread woven in the first places I glued down, but hopefully it doesn't look too bad.

It's very tedious trimming all those tiny sticks to the same size and it was easier to glue it down as one big piece rather than remove every single stick of bamboo and glue them down individually.

Could you camouflage the thread with paint? It might look worse to you, but in pictures I can hardly tell - my focus was on the window.
