My Maternal Grandfather's square

Shareb

This is my Granddad's square.  He was a carpenter and when WWII broke out, he signed up (even though he wasn't required to) to go as part of a hospital unit.  So he went into WWII with the rest of the NZ forces at the beginning of the war, to build hospitals.  He was caught in Egypt by the Italians and put into a POW camp in Italy.  In this square you'll see all the medals he received, but also a photo in a pocket.  This is a pic of my mum and uncle that my Granddad carried in his pocket throughout the entire war.  I have that photo - it is very, very special.  At the end of the war (he came home and went back again after being released from the camp) when he returned home for good, despite being ill from wounds etc received, he built a house for his family - as he had promised his wife when they married.  This house is still there and so I modelled this off the exact house.  He built the house in 1946 and in 1947 he passed away.  They couldn't afford to stay and so my Nana and her two children had to move from this house into a state house - the third room, the kitchen.
