I found a miniature Bridal Basket for my Peranakan dollhouse on eBay! These are also known as Wedding or Betrothal Baskets. These were usually filled with gifts for the family of the bride-to-be by the groom and his family. Always in even numbers, gifts included peanut or rice candies, oranges, bangles, dried seafood, wine, dried fruits, tea and red packets containing money. The bride's family would then place gifts in the baskets and return them to the groom's family. There would usually be two baskets, each one hanging from a shoulder pole. I only found one of these, it is actually a vintage souvenir and is beautifully enamelled. But it will look beautiful in the Willowcrest some day. I found the explanation for the baskets in a book called Things Chinese (Antiques/Crafts/Collectibles) by Ronald G Knapp. It is an amazing book for anyone interested in Chinese culture or wanting to build a Chinese dollhouse.
