Stick Horse

Steve Panner

As I've experimented with resin casting I got plenty of flawed horses, especially in the leg areas. Most of them found their way into the trash and some became toys for my daughter. But one got lost in the clutter on my desk and I kept bumping into it from time to time.

And one day inspiration struck and with some scraps of mahogany it became a trash to treasure story.

The mahogany was a pain to turn on the lathe because the piece is long and thin and it vibrated itself to pieces a few times before I manage to get one right. Those scraps will become kitchen utensils sometime in the future. Nothing gets thrown away here

Thank you all for your comments! I'm so happy you like it, it was a fun little project to make.

Lol, Kathie, I was thinking the same thing. But at the time I was so frustrated with the failures that I just wanted to get rid of them. At the moment I've finished two more horses and I'm running out of blanks, so I have to try casting again and it's likely that I will end up with lots of flawed copies to experiment on.

Kelly, you mean like farm horses? I'm kinda limited in size by the shipping options I have here. Also large animals take ten times the time of smaller critters and it's hard to justify making them. Sometime, in the future, when I'll have plenty of time to do what I want I might try to make a horse. They are quite difficult to sculpt too, the original for the rocking horse took me more than a month and still looks artificial (which is ok for the rocking horses but would feel strange as a lifelike sculpture)

Again thanks for all your encouragements! :)
