Selkie 4,483 Posted October 8, 2014 I always use Minwax products. They are dependable quality. The gel and poly mixed are harder for me to work with because they go on thicker and set up faster. I've had it streak because I was too slow with the application. I prefer to use the liquid kind and just use a rag and wipe it on, let it dry and add more if needed. Then I add the miniwax poly afterwards. I use a minwax product called prestain to pretreat the wood. It's a very watery application and helps the wood to take the stain more evenly.
