Roofing and other Stuff
Since finishing the brick work on the two chimney shafts last week I've been working on roofing the house. The vertical framing for the two gables is complete. The only vertical framing left is the west roof end and the 3rd level of the turret.
I've been working on the turret this weekend and I have most of the studs and spacers cut. I'm still installing the spacers and will install the studs once this step is complete. I also made a 1/8" thick by 3/4" tall ring with a 14" diameter today. I used the existing ring that makes up the top of the turret to mark the diameter on two 1/8" wood panels. The panels are only 6" across, so I had to leave a space between the two. After taping the two panels onto a table to keep the spacing, I temporarily glued small blocks around the inside & outside edges of the ring. I ran a bead of glue along the top of the first strip of 1/32" thick wood. I cut a number of 6" long wood strips by cutting across the grain of a 1/16" thick wood sheet and slid the strips down the top edge of the 1st strip, spreading the glue evenly all the way down. The final 1/32" wood strip was quickly inserted into the remaining space between the ring and the inside blocks. By sandwiching 3 layers of wood with an alternating grain orientation I have produced a sturdy ring for the base of the roof cone.
The next step of construction will involve marrying the turret with the main roof. It won't be easy, but getting this difficult step out of the way will be a relief.
