foxhall progress! we have light!

I spent a good portion of the day just floating around the house trying to decide what if anything i wanted to do on the foxhall today. i managed to glue on the ceiling paper in the rooms that will have that type. then i decided to wire in my carriage lights for the outdoors to see if i could do it! they work! all of them!!!!! i'm pretty excited. i want to make sure they are really secure before i wallpaper over them. not sure if i should solder them or what. i read somewhere that someone used clear nail polish to lock the connections in place. i'll have to do some research on that first, i don't want to do that and find that it was a bad idea. lighting is so expensive.

well I need to get one more carriage lamp for the right 2 story addition. , houseworks brand. I wa just going to put in one light up the upstairs french doors on the main house but now i'm thinking i would like another carriage lamp up there to balance it out. i need to figure out what brand that one is, as it is different that all the others.

I AM REALLY SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!! I've tape wired other houses but this is the first time that i've actually wired a light. so i am just thrilled that they all work. this house is going to have alot of lights so i'm sure that by the time i'm finished i will be alot better in technique. I wont wire in any of the interior lights until i have ceilings and wallpaper up. i think i will spend a couple of hours playing with wallpaper and see what i want to go in each room. I'm waiting on more wallpaper to arrive and it will be here hopefully by monday. not that it matters really, this next week is my busy week at work and i will also be on call so i doubt i will get much done. but it will be nice to have all of my supplies here. i also ordered wood flooring and some tile.

speaking of tile...i found some of the tile that i was going to use in my grosvenor. it's just beautiful and will now go into the hallway of this house. i will have plenty to do the main hall.

well, i was excited that i used my dremel 400 to drill the holes for the lights today. it's the first time i've used it to drill and after i finally figured out how to change the collet (spelling)? and put the drill bit in i was pretty excited about using it. It worked incredibly well. It took me about 30 minutes to figure out how to change everything and get the drill bit in. i'm mechanically challenged i realize that, but glad i figured it out.

well here's a few shots of my lighting! the house has a long way to go, but this is the little bit of progress i've made recently. now the fun part is here! wallpapering!!!!

Don't use nail polish to connect wires. Soldering is easy, just practice a few times on scrap wire. Here's a tutorial:

http://www.teamnovak.com/tech_info/how_to/solder/index.html

Don't get lead solder. Get the smallest Radio Shack has, it should be 96% tin and 4% silver. Also get the smallest "heat shrink tubing".

Use a small wattage soldering iron.

Strip the wires about 1/2 ".

Cut a piece of the heat shrink tubing about an inch, slide this down the wire.

Solder the wires together as per tutorial.

After the wires are soldered and cool, center the tubing over the bare joint. I use a hair dryer to shrink it.

Try a damp sponge to keep the tip of the iron clean when the iron is hot.
