notes on Art Deco, for the San Fran
Well my new niece should be coming along soon, so if I get started on the San Fran, she may get her house before her fifth birthday...! Her mother likes art deco, and green, so these are elements that I am looking to incorporate heavily into the house.
For the exterior, I am thinking heavy cream with lime and olive green trim... Not too heavy on the trim though...
I have been googling for "french" or "1930's" art deco style, with mixed results-- from Art, Design and Visual Thinking comes this picture:
The walls look like an offset block pattern, and I can't really tell what the ceiling treatment is... But I like it much better than alot of the "modern art deco" pictures that I see, which tend to look like hotel rooms to me.
realtor.com says: "French designers mixed classical and contemporary elements, including the passionate colors of Fauvist paintings, sensuous fabrics, exotic artifacts of Egypt, Mexico, and the Middle and Far East, and Cubist painters geometric shapes in round mirrors, floor treatments and barrel-shaped chairs..." whereas American designers went to chrome / Al...

So far I am seeing alot of creams / off-tans / beige, zebra or other animal print, geometric patterns, earth colors offset with striking reds / blacks / jewel-tones etc... Hmmmm...
A San Fran that inspires me is Mary's San Fran; some of the rooms look almost French countryside to me, while the living room has a 70's look. Fancydollhouses has a San Fran that is white with green trim on the exterior, and hard to describe on the interior-- an eclectic look for the inside, I guess you might say...
