Mornington Mews

Bought my new house yesterday. I wanted to build a house that I could decorate with Georgian architectural features, such as columns, panels, 6-12 paned windows, porticos, ceiling roses, etc and this one just called out more than others. The fact that it was half price also helped :D

Unpacked the little box of trim - windows and doors - last night. This morning I phoned my sister to see if my niece could adopt the house currently occupying my sitting room: - It still needs a name! -

She said yes, til easter at least, which gave me the go ahead to unpack my new house. I'll take it to her in a couple weeks, and in the meantime I removed the roof of the mansion and did a dry fit of Mornington Mews on top of it instead

I prefer back opening houses so you can look into the rooms and see the windows on the other side. This house is front opening, so my aim was to see if i could convert it to open back. I think it is doable. The house slots together with various grooves for the different walls/floors, so if I take the back panel off, the groove is still there. The front panels can be glued on I think without problem. If necessary I could use a bracket to help screw it on, but I think the glue would probably hold.

When I talked to the guy at the Model shop he said the main thing with back opening houses was that usually thats where all the electricity stuff hides. Normally I wouldn't electrify my houses, but because this one is supposed to be quite grand, I think I might. Thought perhaps i could use the groves from the back panel to hide some wires, and maybe put columns over them to hide them.

Another thing I'm not so fond of with this house is that the staircases have walls either side. I am seeing if i can remove the downstairs walls and make the stairs wider and a bit more grand. The inside walls are all one piece, so instead of completely removing the downstairs one I thought I would trim it quite a bit and just leave a column to hold up the next floors walls. I also reversed the staircases, which is nicer when you're looking from the back, but a little odd if you look in the front i guess, but it'll be good anyway I'm sure.

Ok, thats all for now, have to wait for Chris (boyfriend) to get home before I can take pictures with his phone.
