Building Window Boxes
This one's for you Roni!
Making a window box is relatively easy. You cut out rectangles in various sizes and glue them together!
I start with a piece of 1/8" balsa or bass wood (usually whichever one is lying on my table at the time). I start by cutting out all the pieces I'm going to need for a window box. You need three pieces that are 3/4" wide by however long you want the window box to be. The window boxes that I'm making here measure 3/4" x 6" and I've cut out six of them because I'm making two window boxes (four sides and two bottoms). I've also cut out four END pieces measuring 3/4" X 3/4" (you may have to shave these down a bit at the end).
Then I glued the sides to the base at the bottom.
Then I glued in the end pieces.
And voila', after a little bit of paint and a profusion of flowers I will have some beautiful window boxes.
I also made window boxes for the front porch at 3/4" X 4 1/2" and one for the top of the kitchen window at 3/4" X 5". I'll post a picture once they've all been potted!!
To attach them to the house you would just apply glue to the back of the window box and attach it to the house. I made brackets for the bottom of my window boxes on the Beacon Hill. To do that just use one of the brackets you have as a template, cut it out (carefully), sand it a bit, paint and you've got a bracket for the bottom of your window box!
Good luck!
