Railings and Final Assembly
Here's the cutout for the upper floor, quick specs the long flat sides are 2 3/4" long, just enough to allow the step to clear the hole.
Here's a shot of the hole, ours looks a little bit different. We had a previous hole for another staircase that just didn't fly, but it worked out in the end :angry: .

Now it's time to start assembling the staircase. As always in assembling do a dry fit of all pieces before gluing, it helps to give you a better idea what you're doing so no 'OOPS' happens. :angry:
To start, get a step, dowel, bead, 5/64" drill bit and glue.
Take the bead and run the drill bit through to clean out any debris, take the dowel and put some glue on it about 1/2" up from the end, slide the bead on until 1/16" of the dowel is sticking out.

The things you will need:
3/32" drill bit
5/64" drill bit
Fosters Mini Dowels
Jewelry Craft Wood Beads
Craft Glue (he used Arleene's)
Carpet Tape
X-acto knife and a few extra blades
1/16" x 12 x 3 piece of basswood
12" ruler
