My first 1:12 scale dollhouse build

Gradually getting there...

I have now completed all the decorative work for the ground floor and first floor. I haven't glued much down on the first floor as I have to run wires and hang lights. So one of my next major tasks will be creating a couple of chandeliers. I have been playing today - but too tired to put in real effort. There are obviously some finishing touches that I will do once the whole house is together - just to tidy bits up. So my next jobs are electrical and windows/doors. So not looking forw

Bathroom tiles and styles

My dollhouse is really coming together! I have re-done a couple of little things that were bugging me and I have been working on the bathroom. Extremely happy with how it's turning out! Thought I'd share a few photos. For the tiling on the walls I used contact paper - a vinyl sticky-backed 'paper' used for covering shelves, books etc. I used balsa wood to create the cabinet. The doors open. I have yet to put the sinks in - I am using oval bottle tops which I will spray copper. Plus I hav

Wallpaper, study, bookselves and bays.

I have been working every day on my dollhouse but it does seem to take a long time to get things done. I guess that's the way of being a mum - especially a homeschooling one! I have dry-fit the second floor and all the walls. I have also dry-fit the tower and two bays. I have finished the flooring for all of the second level. I have papered the study, the study bay and the kitchen bay. I have also created a 'built in' bookshelf which took me ages to paint to a finish I was happy with.

Fire places and panelling

I have been really busy! I pulled all the walls down and have decided to put on panelling. It had been nagging at me and I know I would have been disappointed should I not have done it. I also decided - since it was that wall that I started on, to do both fireplaces. I had a plastic picture frame that my daughter had broken the glass of. I had put it aside as I had said it would make an awesome fireplace. So the other day I got it out, pushed out the wooden pieces and got to work. I cut

Decorating the first floor!

I've been wallpapering!! I have dry-fit all the walls (dry-fit means taping together to ensure they fit well rather than gluing) and papered all of the downstairs rooms. The things I can't decorate at this stage are the bay windows/doors in the kitchen, dining and living room. Apparently they are the last thing to be done. I had a few issues with wall papering - usually me just being completely thick! However I think they are coming together really well. I am using real wallpaper from samp

Wooden flooring first floor

Well my house is really coming together! I have now finished all of the first level floors. For the wooden floors I first made a template of the space using paper. From there I cut a cardboard template - it had to be relatively thick as I had to consider how tall the tiles and slate are in order to keep it level. I then cut 1cm strips of vaneer which I used wood glue to adhere to the cardboard. I left to dry. I then put on the first coat of polyurethane. After that had dried I cut all the

Tiling!

So......I have been very busy making tiles for the entrance and slate for the kitchen! I decided to make the tiles 2cm square so I used a permanent marker and marked a white tile measurements. I then baked it for 30mins in order to bake the vivid onto the tile - you don't want it coming off onto your polymer clay. Then I used a pasta machine to roll out white clay to a uniform thickness. I used the side of a steel ruler to mark out the tiles, measuring up using the grid on the tile. I then

I have Finished my Staircase!!!

Well I am so pleased that my hubby taught me how to use the sander thingee machine (apparently a linisher??) in the garage for it came in handy today. After breaking off the back piece yet again, I sanded one edge down considerably. It then sat comfortably around the lower landing. It needs some filler and touch up paint in some places but finally after so many days of work the staircase is complete. I'm actually really happy with it! Equally I'm really happy it's done and I can move on to

Stairs, stairs and more stairs...oh and people!

Well.....not much to say really. I have spent days upon days preparing my staircase. The white parts have been spackled, primed, sanded oodles of times and painted. Oh, and I added in detail on the sides which I was quite pleased with. However when it came to putting the stairs together it's been a whole other story. I now know that whether I can understand them or not, I must TRY to read the instructions before doing ANYTHING! I do wish Greenleaf put instructions together with a heap of d

Day 4/5!

Yesterday I punched out all the staircase pieces. Since I have seen how difficult this can be - I was extremely careful and luckily all the pieces came out cleanly! I have decided to have the treads and handrail stained wood and the rest gloss white. So - after carefully sanding I experimented with wood stain using Mod Podge and chalk pastels. Once I was happy with the colour I stained all the treads and the handrail pieces. Once dry I gave it two coats of gloss polyurethane. I'm really ha

Day um.....3....4?

So I have learned (if I didn't already know) that this dollhouse, if I want to do it well, is going to take time. Which is fine - I'm happy with that. So I ended up spending more time on the foundation. After talking with others via the Greenleaf forum, I realised that for a large house like the Pierce, it is vital that the foundation is level. Even if it's just a few millimetres out, it may have an adverse affect on the upper story walls etc. So..thankfully my husband is an engineer. He helped

Day 2! The foundation...

Today I finished cutting, sanding and priming the foundation pieces. I then did a dry-fit onto the base and found/fixed problem areas. Then I glued it all together using wood glue. I used masking tape to fit it all firmly together while it dries overnight. I am considering using small blocks of wood to reinforce the foundation. I'll decide tomorrow!

Day 1 - Getting everything ready to GO!

Well, I have spent a month or more getting ready to start my Greenleaf Pierce! By the time it got to 27th Dec - my 'D' day, I was starting to procrastinate because I became terrified of starting! After creating my workspace yesterday - hubby having bought me a 10 drawer metal file cabinet and he cut a good heavy board on which to build the house - today really was the day! After feeding various people's cats (it's summer holidays here) and putting away all the Christmas decorations I finally
